APPEARANCE
Alphonse stands at around 5’4”. He has long honey-blonde hair that is seen in a ponytail most of the time and dark brown eyes. He wears a long-sleeved black mandarin style shirt with white trim, black pants and black dress shoes. Over that is a long red hooded overcoat with the black Nicholas Flamel symbol on the back. The coat was worn as a tribute to his brother, Edward. He also wears white gloves that have transmutation circles on either one so that he doesn’t need to take the time to draw out an alchemy equation.
PERSONALITY
Alphonse is a very protective person. Over the four years of his adventures with his older brother Edward, he is constantly seen worrying over his brother and others, and even going so far as to use his hollow metal body to hide people who were in danger. He also is very naïve and easily manipulated, such as when he was led to believe that one of the homunculi, Sloth, still cared about he and his brother, since she took the form of their mother. He wants to believe in the good of people as well, hence why he can’t hate his and Edward’s father, even though he didn’t appear at their mother’s funeral and Alphonse never met him. He waits to make judgment on people until he sees them in action for himself. He is easily manipulated in the sense that people can cause him to double-check his actions and thoughts. For example, he was convinced by a serial murderer, Barry the Chopper, that instead of being a soul attached to a suit of armor, that he was in fact, a creation created by his elder brother. He was convinced then that all of his memories were artificially created, since he had no physical body to prove that he had once, indeed, been human. Al overall has a kind heart and wants to do nothing other than what he believes will help people.
ABILITIES/STRENGTHS
Alphonse possesses the ability to perform alchemy. That is, if he is given a mass, he can use energy to convert it into different forms. However, the new mass must be made of the same material as the old and must be the same mass as the old object. For example, in the series, Alphonse damages a radio and it’s broken into several pieces. He then creates a transmutation circle (which focuses the energy he summons into the object) and puts the radio and all of its pieces in the center of the circle. He summons the energy from the circle and the radio is repaired because all of it’s pieces are present at the time of the transmutation. Alchemy can also move atoms around to create new molecules while still keeping the principle of the Law of Conservation of Mass intact. An example of this is when Edward, Al’s brother, transmutes all of the water in an enemy’s body into ethanol, which evaporates at room temperature. The H20 was broken apart and mixed with some of the carbon from the enemy’s body to form the Ethanol whose chemical formula is C2H60.
Naturally, Alphonse is good at biology and chemistry because of the knowledge that’s needed to perform alchemy while adhering to the Law of Conservation of Mass.
Not only this, but Al is also very skilled in hand to hand combat. When he was stuck inside his armor, performing alchemy was too time consuming in the heat of battle because he would have to draw out the transmutation circle with chalk. Instead, he honed his skills as a hand-to-hand combat fighter and these skills were not lost when he became human once more.
Alphonse’s ability to believe in the good of people is also a strength of his.
WEAKNESSES
This is only a limitation to alchemy, but will be listed in Weaknesses: Alphonse cannot perform any sort of alchemy that involves transmuting the human body. The cost of doing so is too great: literally, an eye for an eye, though human life requires much more than just one other person’s life. One other limitation is that alchemy cannot be used to transmute gold.
Alphonse can be seen as too naïve a lot of the time, as stated in his personality section above. This has led to great misunderstandings that almost led to him abandoning his brother. He believed an enemy when he planted doubts in his mind that he may not actually be human and that all of his memories were implanted by Edward into his metal body (when he had it). Another weakness is how over-emotional Al can get in desperate situations. For example, when machines from another world were attacking Amestris, he witnessed the death of a small girl. He nearly used Human Transmutation to bring her back to “life” which is a taboo in terms of Alchemy.

HISTORY
Alphonse Elric was born to Hoenheim and Trisha Elric. He has a brother, Edward who is a year older than he is. Alphonse never really knew his father, for he left the family when he was only a year old to study alchemy further. As he and Ed grew up, their mother grew sicker and sicker, though Alphonse didn’t really notice it much other than when Trisha would have to stop going out as often as she used to. When Alphonse and Edward came home from a day from a day of fruit-picking, however, the younger Elric was in for a rude awakening when the two discovered their mother collapsed on the floor of their house.
For a couple of weeks he and his brother watched their mother’s health decline until finally, they watched her die peacefully, her asking them to transmute something for her because it reminded her of their father. Alphonse was devastated as was his brother. And so, his brother came up with the idea to attempt Human Transmutation—a forbidden art—in order to bring their mother back to life. The boys have always learned through alchemy that the universe operates on the basis of Equivalent Exchange. However, that one time, they underestimated its absoluteness. Nothing is equivalent to human life other than another human life. Thus, without such a sacrifice, Alphonse was nearly taken to satisfy the equation along with Edward’s left leg. In order to save his brother, Ed sacrificed his right arm to attach Al’s soul to a suit of armor.
After that horrific night, the two set off on a journey to recover their original bodies by seeking the Philosopher’s Stone which bypassed the Law of Equivalent Exchange. After four years of traveling, Alphonse was nearly destroyed by a bomb-happy ex-army officer named Kimblee. His demise was to be a slow one. However, as he was about to detonate and kill the hundreds of soldiers that were searching the otherwise deserted town, his metal body was transformed into the Philosopher’s Stone. This achievement came with a great cost—the lives of the hundreds of soldiers who were invading the city at the time.
After Alphonse was then subsequently captured by Homunculi, he was taken to an Underground City that had been lost to time and the attempt to make a Philosopher’s stone. Down there, he was bound to a transmutation circle to await the arrival of his brother. Alphonse struggled, for he knew that the Homunculi were luring his brother there to kill him. They wouldn’t tolerate opposition, even if they did get what they wanted from the Philosopher’s stone.
Edward did eventually come and after a fight with Envy, Edward was killed. Overcome with grief, Alphonse activated the powers of the Philosopher’s stone in order to pull Edward’s soul back from the Gate and to restore his body to normal. By doing this, Alphonse sacrificed his life. However, when Edward awoke, Al was nowhere to be found. He knew that he was alive by Alphonse’s sacrifice. He couldn’t let his little brother die, and so he transmuted himself to bring Al back to his world. In doing so, Edward crossed through the gate and landed in our world, where physics and technology dominated the world of science, as opposed to alchemy in his world.
Because of this sacrifice, Alphonse is alive in Amestris still. He awoke in his human form to find his brother missing and spent the next two years searching for him. All memories still intact, save for the memories down in the Underground City, he researched ways that could possibly open the gate without having to sacrifice himself or anyone else. He has had dreams ever since he awoke in his human form that he lived with his brother in a place called Munich and that he worked with Edward to build rockets. Al knew these couldn’t be just mere dreams—they felt far too real. He knew deep in his heart that Ed was alive somewhere.
One day, Wrath, one of the Homunculi, was found by Winry. She repaired the automail (prosthetic arm and leg) that he now had to use since he had once had Edward’s real arm and leg. Wrath spoke with Alphonse, and decided to lead Al to the Underground City, since Al could not remember how to get there. Wrath led him there, and Alphonse found a transmutation circle in the middle of the City. Things should have gone smoothly from there until Gluttony, another of the Homunculi, attacked Wrath. As Al watched in horror and helplessness, Wrath anchored himself to the ground as Gluttony chomped down on him. Wrath begged Al to transmute them both in order to open the Gate so that Al could see his brother once more. Alphonse realized that Wrath was sacrificing his life for him, and so, the younger Elric transmuted both Homunculi to open the Gate.
Out of the portal Alphonse had created, strange flying machines came through. One of them though, one of the less sinister looking ones, had a single figure in it. That figure was nothing but a blur of gold hair to Alphonse. He was about to go after the strange machine, but debris from the chaos on all sides was flying everywhere. Unfortunately, he was hit in the side of the head with a piece of cement from a nearby crumbling building and was knocked unconscious. He woke up in a white room dazed and confused…
